There is something surreal about running a team through an
exercise that you learned from an instructor just a few weeks prior. That’s
what happened at our first marketing meeting when I asked the team to join me
in mapping out brand nodes for Whale House Studios, a collection of literal or
figurative associations that we believe an observer would have about what we’re
doing here. That was a bit over a week ago and if I wasn’t sure about the
process then, I am now. With the linguistic associations we generated in mind,
on Tuesday Desiree, Anna, and I embarked on creating a first draft for the
logo. Three of us, whom I mentally refer to as the Visual Identity Super Squad,
went through a plethora of scribbles generated by the team as a whole and
picked a design to focus on.
Now I can’t draw to save my ship so while I talked brand
nodes, Desiree and Anna generated drafts as we all bounced feedback back and
forth. After a couple hours the work was done, and we had the first iteration
of the logo. There are still new iterations to be developed but we’re heading a
direction we feel comfortable with.
Then, on Friday the 21st’s marketing meeting we
got started talking typography. If I learned anything about that process, it’s
that fonts sure are pretty until you’ve scrolled through thousands of them and
your eyes are bleeding. Nevertheless, we picked out some possibilities and
we’re making progress towards a full visual identity.
Check out Anna’s post for visual progress on these points.
In closing, some of my personal next steps involve drafting components of the media
kit:
- Press Release
- Company Background
- Executive Biography
- Brand Dictionary

Alex
